Join us for a discussion and signing of Archbishop Borys Gudziak’s new book, “Living Victoriously: The School of Patriarch Joseph Slipyj,” published by the Ukrainian Catholic University Press. The event is hosted by the Ukrainian Library in Jenkintown, at the UECC. Historian Andriy Zhyvachivsky will moderate the conversation with Metropolitan Borys.
The publication is based on the texts of the speeches of Archbishop Borys Gudziak, Metropolitan of Philadelphia of the UGCC and President of Ukrainian Catholic University, in June 2017 in Kyiv and Lviv. The speeches were dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj and delivered under the titles “Be Yourself” and “Desire the Great!”
The presentation in Philadelphia will take place in remembrance of the 80th anniversary of Patriarch Slipyj’s infamous arrest on April 12, 1945, which began his 18-year journey of imprisonment and exile.
The book contains Archbishop Gudziak’s personal memories from his childhood and adolescence, memories of his first meetings with the Patriarch, and impressions of communicating with him while studying at Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome. It also offers an understanding of the Patriarch’s personality and activities through the prism of Archbishop Gudziak’s life experience and modern challenges.
In the book, Josyf Slipyj emerges not only as a church leader, a scientist, and a long-time indomitable prisoner of the Soviet system, but also as a courageous administrator who, in difficult and adverse circumstances, built, restored, assembled, and created teams and projects that not only survived after his death, but grew and thrived.
