UCU is establishing a permanent scholarship fund named after Volodymyr Maryshchuk, a graduate of the Faculty of Humanities and a serviceman who gave his life for Ukraine.

Volodymyr studied in the bachelor’s and master’s history programs at the Ukrainian Catholic University. He loved his hometown of Bibrka, was an avid soccer fan, and had been passionate about history since childhood. He often recalled his university years—student trips, internships, and the UCU community—as one of the brightest periods of his life.
Teachers and friends remember Volodymyr as a profound, detail-oriented, noble, and reliable person. Orysia Bila, Head of the Philosophy Department in UCU’s Faculty of Philosophy and Theology and a Ph.D. in philosophy, recalls Volodymyr as a noble, slightly introverted, and highly observant student. He listened intently to lectures and was quick to notice inaccuracies, which encouraged young instructors to prepare for their classes even more thoroughly.

“Volodya went to war because he could not do otherwise; if you are a true historian, you know the price of your people’s independence,” wrote Bila.
Lubomyr Tarnovsky, UCU Vice-Rector for Administrative and Financial Affairs and the former director of the residential wing where Volodya lived, remembers him as a deep, well-informed individual with a great sense of humor.
“You could rely on him for anything,” Tarnovsky shared.

Volodymyr initially tried to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine back in 2014, but he was turned away for health reasons. The occupation of the Donetsk region—where he had family and had spent his childhood vacations—was deeply painful for him. In 2023, Volodymyr was mobilized into the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, “Magura.” He participated in the Kursk operation. Before his final deployment to the front lines, he called his family to say goodbye, telling them, “This is my choice.”
To honor Volodymyr Maryshchuk’s memory, the Ukrainian Catholic University is establishing a permanent scholarship fund with a goal of raising $100,000. This amount will form an endowment: the fund’s principal will be invested, and the annual returns will be used to provide scholarships for students who cannot afford tuition.
Through this initiative, Volodymyr’s legacy will live on beyond the memories of his family, friends, teachers, and the UCU community. It will become an integral part of the university’s future, supporting students who will study, grow, and serve Ukraine, all while remembering the heroes who made that future possible.
