Second-year students of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the Ukrainian Catholic University Volodymyr Fedynyak and Maksym Prostyk won top places in the International Mathematics Competition for University Students 2020, which this year was conducted by King’s College London.  More than 500 students from the whole world participated in the competition online from 25 to 30 July.

The team of the Faculty of Applied Sciences took part for the first time in this international mathematics competition with good results, as two UCU students were among the winners of the competition, including colleagues from the world’s best universities. A particularity of this competition is that its participants represent and perform in the name of their own university. Professor Rostyslav Hryniv, a teacher at the faculty, and Oles Dobosevych, director of the Bachelor’s Program in Computer Studies, were the heads of the UCU team. The participants were offered assignments in statistics, probability theory, algebra, and other topics.

Commenting on the success of his students, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences Yaroslav Prytula emphasized the important of the international experience that the students receive in such competitions. “We want to see our students and graduates on the global level, so it is extremely important for us that they feel the international context and that it be maximally tangible for them. Participation, and also victory, in such international competitions speaks, on the one hand, about the students’ strong motivation for such achievements, and, on the other hand, demonstrates that we are providing them with a high-quality education. This success also shows that UCU is a multifaceted university with the highest educational standard, not only in the humanities, theology, or business, but, importantly, also in the fields of exact and computer sciences.”

Yaroslav Prytula also noted that this success was possible thanks to fruitful cooperation between students and teachers. For a long time now a math club has been active at the faculty, where students not only deepen their knowledge of math but learn how to work in a team together with their mentors.

We recall that last year the Cardio Vision team, with participants who were graduates and current students of the UCU Faculty of Applied Sciences, won the Microsoft AI Idea Challenge Contest. They presented a solution to one of humanity’s biggest problems, death from cardiovascular diseases.

In addition, the Faculty of Applied Sciences has first place in the DOU ratings. Every year the IT platform DOU conducts a survey on the quality of education at Ukrainian universities. In 2019, the UCU Faculty of Applied Sciences shared first place with the Informatics Faculty of tbe National Academy of Kyiv Mohyla Academy. Educational programs are rated on the basis of the comments of current and former students.
