On Giving Tuesday, we want to include you in a legacy of bravery and hope. UCU is honoring one of its graduates, Oles-Yulian Shcherba, with an endowed scholarship. Oles was killed at the age of 26 fighting the Russians in Donetsk. Your gift will ensure his valiant sacrifice is remembered and inspires future generations of students at UCU.

Oles-Yulian was born in Hodovytsia, in the Lviv region. He studied psychology at UCU and graduated from the Faculty of Health Sciences in 2018. During his studies, he volunteered at the Emmaus House, a place where disabled individuals live and work alongside UCU students.

“Even after completing his studies, he never forgot our friends,” recalled his Emmaus colleagues. “During the pandemic, when the house couldn’t receive guests due to quarantine restrictions, Oles would simply come to deliver sweets (a box or two) and have a brief conversation with friends and assistants, even through an open window. “

UCU’s Giving Tuesday goal is to raise $20,000 of the $100,000 needed to fully fund this endowment and provide a scholarship in Oles’s name for generations of students. In the true spirit of Giving Tuesday, a generous UCU Foundation donor has offered to match any gift up to $10,000.

Your $100 gift will become $200, a $1,000 gift will become $2,000 and so on. We hope you will take advantage of our match donor’s incredible generosity to double the size of your donation.

It is a terrible tragedy when such a young, bright, promising person leaves us. Your gift will help Ukraine be what Oles dreamed of and fought for – vibrant, strong, free, and independent.
